How to Create a Portrait from Text

In this tutorial, I will be showing you, how you can compose a portrait from a text in Photoshop.

  • Open the picture that you want to be made of text.
  • Now go to the Select Menu -> Color Range.
  • In the Color Range Window, select Shadows
  • Certain areas of the picture would be selected. Now create a new layer by clicking on the create new layer icon in the right lower corner of the screen.
  • Now make sure black is selected as the foreground color, if not make it black. Then click on the New Layer and press Alt+Del.
  • Now the selected area would be filled in black.
  • Now delete the bottom layer (the original picture)
  • You should get something similar to this.
  • Now select Type Tool in the Tool Box and make a Text Box covering the picture completely.
  • Insert the text you want. Here, I will be using “LASITH MALINGA”. (Don’t use bigger fonts)
  • Cover the picture completely with your text by copy pasting the text within the text box.
  • Now Click on the Text layer and click on layer mask.
  • Then Click on the Picture Layer and Press Ctrl+A.
  • Then copy the selection by pressing Ctrl+C
  • Now Press Alt Key and Click on the Layer Mask (The White Color box you find next to the T in the text layer).
  • Now the screen will turn white. Now paste what you have copied by pressing Ctrl+V
  • Press Ctrl+D to cancel the selection.
  • Now Press Ctrl+I to invert the selection.
  • Now Press on the eyeball in front of the text layer.
  • You should get something like this.
  • Now delete the bottom layer i.e the picture layer.
  • Now you can get a picture made completely from text.
  • You can add a color gradient to enhance the look if you want.
  • To do that, right click on the layer and select Blending Options.
  • Then Select Gradient Overlay on the Sidebar.
  • Choose a gradient you prefer and click on OK.
